THE TERRITORY

Oltrepo Pavese is a hilly agricultural area with a long tradition of wine production. Among the top five Italian DOCs in terms of size, it boasts an ancient tradition dating back to Roman times.

Casteggio, known as ‘Clastidium’ at the time, was an important Roman fort, the scene of victorious battles with the Insubres.

Pliny the Elder, writer, admiral and naturalist, who died as a result of the eruption of Vesuvius (Pompeii), described the hills of Casteggio and Oltrepò as: ‘Covered with lush vineyards’.

Strabone, a Greek geographer, visited Padania around 20 AD, particularly the Oltrepò Pavese area, stating that ‘the best of the Romans lived there, tall, hard-working, skilled in producing excellent wine, which they stored in barrels as big as houses’.

Over time, this ancient tradition has been enriched with different types and versions of wines, from young and aged reds and whites to classic and martinotti sparkling wines, as well as aromatic wines.

The Oltrepò hills are an important area for the production of certified wines, the leading wine-growing region in Lombardy (with 63% of the area under vines, it produces 55% of the wine in the entire region).

Broadly speaking, this is a description of the wine-producing area in Lombardy known as Oltrepò Pavese, a DOC region covering approximately 13,500 hectares of vineyards.
